AAP Suspends Punjab MLA Over School Staffing Criticism

The Aam Aadmi Party suspended MLA Sukhveer Singh Maiserkhana after he publicly criticized the Punjab government for severe teacher shortages in state schools.

The Aam Aadmi Party suspended the primary membership of MLA Sukhveer Singh Maiserkhana on October 3, 2026, citing indiscipline and anti-party activities. The action followed a Facebook Live video in which Maiserkhana criticized the Punjab government for a severe shortage of teachers in government schools, including the School of Eminence where his own children are enrolled. Maiserkhana claimed he had repeatedly raised the issue with Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and party leadership to no avail, noting that 31,370 teaching posts remain vacant across various cadres in Punjab.

While the party accused Maiserkhana of spreading false rumors and tarnishing its image, the MLA maintained he was fighting for the education system and the children of his constituency. He stated that he could not tolerate the situation in the schools any longer.

Pargat Singh, president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, condemned the suspension on October 4, labeling the move a dictatorship. Singh alleged that the ruling party's claims of reform in healthcare and education are a facade and criticized the leadership of Arvind Kejriwal and Bhagwant Mann. The dispute comes as the Congress party consolidates its leadership ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
