Tanzanian Vice President Emmanuel Nchimbi Resigns Over Constitutional Rift

Tanzanian Vice President Emmanuel Nchimbi has resigned from his position, effective September 4, following a reported rift with President Samia Suluhu Hassan. The dispute intensified after Nchimbi urged the public to advocate for a new constitution designed to limit presidential powers and expand civil freedoms.

This political fracture occurs amid broader instability in Tanzania, where the government has carried out crackdowns on civil liberties and used violent suppression against protesters following the October election. While President Hassan has pledged to implement a new constitution by 2030, opposition leaders have expressed skepticism regarding her commitment to these reforms.

Under the national constitution, President Hassan must now appoint a new deputy and secure parliamentary approval within 14 days of the vacancy.
