Australia Cuts Annual Refugee Intake by One-Third

Anthony Albanese and the Labor government will reduce the annual refugee intake from 20,000 to 13,750 for the 2027-28 financial year. This one-third reduction is part of a broader strategy to lower net overseas migration to 225,000, which the Prime Minister described as a response to national needs and post-pandemic economic fluctuations.

The policy shift follows a spike in political support for Pauline Hanson's One Nation party. While the government frames the move as an economic necessity, the Greens and refugee advocates argue that the administration is allowing far-right politics to dictate humanitarian policy and abandoning its own party commitments.

In addition to the refugee cuts, Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke is preparing further migration restrictions. These upcoming measures will target backpackers and British working holidaymakers as part of the government's effort to tighten overall border controls.
