Gordon Brothers Considers Auctioning Discount Retailer Poundland
Gordon Brothers is weighing the sale of Poundland via auction roughly one year after acquiring the struggling UK retailer for a nominal fee.
Investment firm Gordon Brothers is considering the sale of discount retailer Poundland through a potential auction process. The Boston-based firm is currently in discussions with advisers to oversee the deal, approximately 13 months after it acquired the chain for a nominal £1 from the Pepco Group in July 2025.
The potential sale follows a period of severe financial instability for the Walsall-based retailer. Poundland recorded a £79 million pre-tax loss for the year ending September 2024, with revenue declining 2.5 percent to £1.8 billion. To avoid collapse, the company underwent a High Court-approved restructuring plan that resulted in the closure of up to 200 stores and the loss of over 2,000 jobs, leaving roughly 600 locations across the UK.
Since the acquisition, Gordon Brothers provided £80 million in financing and implemented simplified pricing tiers to regain customer momentum. Managing director Barry Williams stated that the company has made significant progress through a recovery plan focused on cost management and returning thousands of items to the £1 price point. However, the move toward a rapid resale suggests a strategy of quick exit from the distressed UK retail market.
