SpaceX Unveils AI1 Orbital Data Centers Ahead of $1.75 Trillion IPO

Elon Musk announced plans to launch one million AI satellites to bypass terrestrial power constraints as SpaceX prepares for a historic initial public offering.

Elon Musk unveiled the AI1 satellite, the first generation of a planned one-million-satellite network designed to create orbital AI data centers. These satellites aim to bypass terrestrial limitations such as power scarcity, permitting delays, and physical vulnerability by using solar energy and radiating heat into space. The AI1 features 230-foot solar panels, a 150 kW peak power payload, and Nvidia GB300 chips, utilizing a decentralized grid connected via laser links.

To support this scale, SpaceX is expanding its Bastrop, Texas, facility into an 11-million-square-foot site called Gigasat. Musk also proposed Terafab, a 100-million-square-foot joint venture with Tesla and Intel to manufacture radiation-hardened semiconductors. These satellites are intended to provide processing power for Tesla's Optimus robots via Grok AI. Production volumes at Gigasat are expected by late 2027, with first compute demonstrations targeted for the same year.

The announcement precedes a historic initial public offering on the Nasdaq under the ticker SPCX, seeking to raise $75 billion at a valuation of approximately $1.75 trillion. However, the plan has drawn criticism from astrophysicists who warn that a million satellites could create a hazardous ring of debris and increase the risk of Kessler syndrome. While SpaceX has requested to retire satellites into disposal or heliocentric orbits to mitigate pollution, some experts characterize the ambitious numbers as an advertisement for the IPO.
