Delectrik Systems to Deploy India's First Utility-Scale Flow Battery

Delectrik Systems and Bondada Engineering will deploy a 100 MWh vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) project at the Khavda Solar Park in Gujarat, India. Awarded by NTPC Renewable Energy Limited, a subsidiary of NTPC Limited, the project is scheduled for installation in 2027. This initiative marks the first non-lithium utility-scale battery energy storage system in India and the first of its scale to be entirely designed, engineered, and manufactured domestically.

The system utilizes a non-containerized architecture intended to stabilize the grid and support round-the-clock renewable electricity. By leveraging VRFB technology, the project aims to reduce fire risks and minimize degradation compared to traditional lithium-ion systems. The installation is part of a larger effort at the Khavda Solar Park, which is projected to become the world's largest renewable energy park with a 30 GW capacity by 2029.

To support this expansion, Delectrik Systems established two subsidiaries: Delectrik Resources Pvt Ltd for vanadium oxide production and Delectrik Esaas Pvt Ltd for commercial energy storage services. The company targets an order book of at least 1 GWh of flow battery capacity within the next 12 months across India, Africa, Australia, and ASEAN regions. Simultaneously, NTPC Limited plans to expand its overall renewable energy portfolio to 60 GW by 2032.
