Equinor Discovers Oil and Gas Near Oseberg Field
Equinor and partners discovered 19 to 50 million barrels of oil equivalent in the North Sea and plan a fast-track development using existing infrastructure.
Equinor ASA and its partners, Petoro and TotalEnergies, discovered oil and gas in the Grimsnes exploration well near the Oseberg field in the North Sea. Preliminary estimates from the Norwegian Offshore Directorate place recoverable resources between 19 million and 50 million barrels of oil equivalent.
The discovery was made by the Deepsea Bergen rig in production licence PL 190, which encountered a 54-metre combined oil and gas column at a vertical depth of 3,752 metres. The partnership plans to tie the discovery back to the Stjerne subsea installation and produce volumes through the Oseberg Sør platform.
Equinor intends to use standardization and repeatable solutions to halve both costs and the time from discovery to production. An investment decision is expected as early as summer 2027, with production targeted within three years. This project supports the company's objective to maintain production of 1.3 million barrels of oil equivalent per day on the Norwegian continental shelf by 2035.
