U.S. Saudi Oil Imports Drop to Zero in July

United States imports of Saudi Arabian oil dropped to zero in July 2026, marking the first time monthly shipments have completely ceased since 1985. The collapse follows the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and disruptions stemming from a conflict between the U.S. and Iran, factors that have pushed global benchmark oil prices higher.

To compensate for the loss of Saudi cargoes, U.S. refiners are pivoting to alternative sources. Imports from Venezuela rose to approximately 600,000 barrels in July, a significant increase from 100,000 barrels at the start of the year. Phillips 66 reduced its Middle Eastern crude intake to less than 1%, instead utilizing domestic light crude at its New Jersey refinery.

Despite the total halt in July, Kpler data suggests imports may rebound to 300,000 barrels per day in August.
