European New-Car Registrations Rise 10.2 Percent in September

European new-car registrations rose 10.2 percent in September as electrified vehicle surges offset sharp declines in petrol and diesel sales.

New-car registrations in Europe increased 10.2 percent year-on-year to 1.36 million vehicles in September, according to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association. This growth was driven by a significant shift toward electrified models, which accounted for 76.2 percent of all new vehicles.

Battery-electric registrations jumped 59.9 percent, while plug-in hybrids rose 24 percent and hybrids increased 5.3 percent. These gains offset steep declines in traditional internal combustion engines, with petrol registrations falling 20.6 percent and diesel registrations dropping 28.2 percent.

Chinese automakers expanded their footprint in the region. Chery nearly tripled its sales and BYD nearly doubled its sales, bringing the combined market share of the top four Chinese brands to 14.6 percent. In contrast, the combined market share of established European giants Volkswagen, Renault, and Stellantis fell to 43.7 percent from 48.4 percent the previous year, although Stellantis saw a 4.5 percent increase in its own registrations.
