S&P 500 CEO Pay Hits Record High in 2025
S&P 500 CEO compensation plans reached an all-time high in 2025, driven largely by a trillion-dollar pay deal for Elon Musk at Tesla Inc.
Compensation plans for S&P 500 CEOs reached an all-time high in 2025, according to data from the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO). The average pay for these executives surged 21% to $22.8 million when excluding Elon Musk, but jumped to over $340 million when including his trillion-dollar package at Tesla Inc.
Musk's Tesla Inc. compensation is tied to aggressive milestones, including a market valuation of $8.5 trillion and the sale of 12 million additional vehicles. Similar high-stakes rewards are present in his SpaceX package, which requires the development of non-Earth-based data centers and the establishment of a human colony on Mars.
The AFL-CIO reports that Musk's deal has altered the dynamic of executive pay, serving as a reference point for other corporate boards. However, the Tesla Inc. award faced opposition from some investment groups, including the manager of Norway's sovereign wealth fund, who cited concerns regarding key person risk and shareholder dilution.
