Campaign for Real Ale Reports Loss and Cancels Festival

The Campaign for Real Ale reported an £800,000 loss and canceled its Great British Beer festival amid declining membership and market pressure.

The Campaign for Real Ale reported an £800,000 loss last year and a membership decline to an eight-year low. To manage these financial losses, the organization has implemented staff redundancies and canceled its Great British Beer festival for the foreseeable future.

Chief Executive Tom Stainer attributed the crisis to the cost-of-living crisis and the dominance of multinational brewers. Stainer argued that large global companies use restrictive tie-in contracts and significant financial resources to squeeze out independent breweries, creating what he described as an "illusion of choice" for consumers in bars.

In response to these market conditions, the organization is calling on the Competition and Markets Authority to investigate the competitive landscape of the beer industry and the influence large brewers exert over pub offerings.
