NHTSA Probes 1 Million GM Vehicles Over Engine Failures
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation into nearly 1 million General Motors vehicles to evaluate the effectiveness of previous engine failure recalls.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened a probe on August 21, 2026, into 997,743 General Motors pickup trucks and SUVs. The investigation focuses on model years 2021-2026 equipped with L87 engines, specifically affecting the Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, and GMC Yukon.
General Motors issued a recall last year to address similar engine failures, which the automaker attributed to a supplier. The current federal investigation consists of a new engineering analysis to examine failures occurring after that recall and to determine if the previous fixes were effective.
