D.K. Shivakumar Coordinates Cabinet Portfolios with Congress High Command

Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar traveled to New Delhi on August 9 to meet with the Indian National Congress high command to resolve internal conflicts regarding cabinet portfolio allocations. The visit aims to finalize a potential minor reshuffle and address discontent among legislators who were denied cabinet positions, specifically regarding social group representation and the distribution of high-profile departments.

Internal friction has centered on the seven berths secured by the Lingayat community and demands for gender representation. Harapanahalli MLA M.P. Latha Mallikarjun formally requested representation for women, prompting Shivakumar to consider appointing a woman minister to the state's final vacant position. While pro tem Speaker T.B. Jayachandra announced his issues were resolved and he would resume his duties, senior Dalit leader H.C. Mahadevappa remains dissatisfied after meeting with party in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala in Delhi.

To pacify the party before the Karnataka Legislature's Monsoon Session begins on August 13, Shivakumar previously held closed-door meetings in Bengaluru with former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. Public Works Department Minister Satish Jarkiholi stated that the allocation of portfolios is expected to be finalized by Monday evening, while Minister Laxman Savadi urged colleagues to treat the process as an internal matter.
