Tony Fernandes Denies Bailout Need as AirAsia Seeks $1 Billion

Tony Fernandes defended AirAsia's liquidity and denied reports of government intervention while announcing plans to raise $1 billion to refinance debt amid soaring fuel costs.

AirAsia co-founder Tony Fernandes denied reports that the Malaysian government sought help from rival airlines to absorb AirAsia's domestic market share. Speaking at a media briefing in Bangkok on September 18, Fernandes characterized the reports as ludicrous and asserted that the airline remains strong in liquidity and cash management, despite a 21% stock drop to a four-year low on Thursday.

To stabilize the company, Fernandes announced plans to raise over $1 billion by December or January through international debt markets and 700 million ringgit in local credit facilities. This refinancing effort aims to reduce costs rather than raise fresh capital. The airline is currently in talks with a global bank for a bond transaction and has received a $1 billion funding offer from a Middle Eastern investor.

AirAsia is facing severe financial strain from jet fuel prices, which rose 66% in the second quarter to an average of $183 a barrel due to conflict in the Middle East. In response, the carrier is adjusting fares, cutting underperforming routes, and returning 25 older aircraft to lessors. The airline is also phasing out fuel-inefficient A330s in favor of A321LR and XLR models and expects a strategic growth announcement with Airbus SE within the next month.
