FAA Awards Millions to Upgrade Maryland and Washington Airports

The Federal Aviation Administration is distributing more than $42 million in federal grants to upgrade airport infrastructure across Maryland and Washington. In Maryland, the agency is providing $33,931,039 through the Airport Improvement Program to three specific sites. Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport will receive $21,091,172 for noise exposure evaluations, cargo apron pavement reconstruction, and the installation of low-emission gate electrification.

Additional Maryland funding includes $7,609,500 for the Carroll County Regional Airport to shift Runway 16/34 to meet current standards, and $5,230,367 for the Hagerstown Regional Airport to rehabilitate runway lighting and pavement while removing obstructive buildings.

Separately, the Tri-Cities Airport in Pasco will use more than $8.3 million from the Airport Improvement Program and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act to expand its deicing facility. The project will allow the airport to accommodate up to three aircraft simultaneously on the deicing pad and includes the construction of two new taxiways and updated runoff infrastructure. Construction at Tri-Cities is scheduled to begin in March 2027 following a bidding process this year.
