European Bank Shares Plunge Amid Political Turmoil Fears

European bank shares fell as much as 4% on Wednesday as political instability fears drove a selloff across major lenders.

Shares of major European lenders experienced a significant selloff on Wednesday, causing the Euro Stoxx Banks Index to drop as much as 4%. This decline pushed the index toward its lowest level in approximately three months and erased a portion of the sector's year-to-date gains.

Societe Generale SA and Deutsche Bank AG saw their stocks tumble by more than 5%. Other institutions trading lower included BNP Paribas SA, Credit Agricole SA, and UniCredit SpA.

Market analysts attribute the downturn to mounting fears of political turmoil, which have simultaneously pushed bond yields higher across the region.
