Australia Expands Biometric Visa Requirements for Indian Applicants
The Australian government now requires certain visa applicants in India to provide fingerprints and facial images to reduce fraud and strengthen migration security.
The Government of Australia expanded its biometric collection requirements for visa applicants in India starting October 26, 2026. Under the new rules, certain applicants must provide fingerprints and facial images to verify their identity, reduce fraud, and strengthen the integrity of the migration system.
The Department of Home Affairs will notify required applicants via email. These individuals can fulfill the requirements by using the Australian Immi App or visiting one of 16 Australian Biometrics Collection Centres managed by VFS Global. The Australian High Commission noted that this expansion aligns India with international practices, as Australia already collects biometrics in nearly 60 countries.
Officials stated that the new requirements apply only to applications lodged on or after October 26 and do not affect previously granted visas or applications submitted before that date. The government maintains that visa processing times will not be adversely affected provided applicants comply with the instructions promptly.
