Malaysia and Petronas Expand Energy Partnership with Turkmenistan
Malaysia and Petronas are expanding long-term energy investments in Turkmenistan, focusing on offshore development and regional connectivity during the OGT 2026 conference in Ashgabat.
Malaysia and its national energy company, Petronas, are expanding their long-term energy partnership with Turkmenistan through new investments and technology transfer. During the Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan 2026 (OGT 2026) conference in Ashgabat, Malaysian Minister of Economy Akmal Nasrullah bin Mohd Nasir emphasized that success should be measured by the value created for Turkmen citizens and the development of local supply chains.
This expansion follows a June 2026 framework agreement on hydrocarbon resource development signed by President Serdar Berdimuhamedov and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. As part of this cooperation, Petronas has begun work on offshore blocks 19 and 20 and secured a 25-year extension of the production sharing contract for Block 1, extending its operations through 2050. Since 1996, Petronas has invested over $12 billion in the country.
Turkmenistan is simultaneously advancing other strategic energy priorities. Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers Guvanch Agajanov noted that the Galkynysh gas field entered its fourth phase of development in April 2026 with financing from the state and China National Petroleum Corporation. Additionally, the State Concern Turkmengas is nearing completion of the Turkmenistan–Afghanistan–Pakistan–India (TAPI) pipeline section from Serhetabat to Herat Province, Afghanistan.
