EU and ASEAN Call for Freedom of Navigation in Hormuz
The European Union and ASEAN issued a joint statement demanding the restoration of safe transit and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
The European Union and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations issued a joint statement on April 28, 2026, demanding the upholding of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. The announcement followed the 25th ASEAN-EU Ministerial Meeting in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam.
Both organizations expressed deep concern regarding unilateral or discriminatory measures that obstruct vessels in the strait. They called for the restoration of safe and continuous transit passage for aircraft and vessels to prevent disruptions to the flow of essential goods, food, and energy, which they noted could harm global economic stability.
In addition to maritime security, the parties reaffirmed their commitment to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and pledged to work toward a successful 2026 Review Conference.
