Costco Doubles Motor Oil Prices Amid Global Supply Crisis

Costco has nearly doubled the price of Kirkland Signature motor oil and imposed purchase limits due to geopolitical conflicts disrupting global lubricant supplies.

Costco Wholesale has nearly doubled the price of its Kirkland Signature full-synthetic motor oil, raising the cost of a 10-quart case from approximately $30 to $57.99. To manage a global lubricant shortage, the retailer implemented purchase limits restricting members to two units of the house-brand oil per week and five units of Mobil 1.

The price surge is driven by a refining crisis where producers are prioritizing higher-profit gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel over base oils. This shift coincides with Brent crude prices exceeding $109 per barrel and U.S. diesel prices reaching record highs between $6.06 and $6.23 per gallon. Additional costs stem from rigorous licensing fees and testing standards for modern turbocharged engines, specifically the dexos1 Gen 3 certification required by General Motors.

Supply chains are severely strained by geopolitical instability. Conflict between the United States and Iran has led to a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and March 2026 airstrikes on Qatar's Pearl GTL facility. Further disruptions include Houthi activity in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and drone attacks on Saudi Arabia's East-West Pipeline. These events have choked off the flow of Group III base oils from the Persian Gulf, creating scarcity that has also affected other industry players like Jiffy Lube.
