Paul Rivera Warns Democratic Party Faces Structural Perils
Political strategist Paul Rivera released a study warning that the Democratic Party faces structural collapse due to declining working-class and youth turnout.
Political strategist Paul Rivera released an updated 564-page study warning that the Democratic Party faces structural perils and a loss of influence among working-class voters. Using the 2026 California primary as a case study, Rivera highlighted a severe turnout gap where voters aged 65 and older participated at a rate of 58%, while those under 35 participated at only 21%. He also noted that turnout among Black, Hispanic, and Asian voters trailed that of white voters.
Rivera argues the party is overly influenced by professional operatives and upper-class elites, leading to national neglect of grassroots organizing. He warns that if these turnout patterns persist in battleground states, Democrats will struggle to win the House or Senate, particularly as Republicans are expected to outspend them for the first time since 2018.
The report also identifies long-term demographic threats, noting population losses in blue states such as California, New York, and Illinois relative to gains in red states like Florida and Texas. Rivera suggests these shifts could reduce Democratic electoral power following the 2030 census. Previously, the national Democratic Party released a truncated version of Rivera's 2024 autopsy, omitting his criticisms regarding Joe Biden's decision to withdraw from the reelection race and the subsequent selection of Kamala Harris.
