Walmart Integrates AI Tools Across Global Retail Operations

Walmart is deploying AI for logistics and employee training while facing labor criticism over automation's impact on frontline staff and workplace safety.

During its annual Associates Week and shareholders meetings in Arkansas, Walmart Inc. announced a global integration of artificial intelligence across product design, inventory management, and logistics. The company is implementing tools such as Code Puppy, an AI agent that enables employees of all levels to develop technical solutions, and AI-optimized routing for order pickers and delivery services. To support this transition, the retailer launched an AI credentialing program developed in partnership with OpenAI, offering certification to all United States staff.

Company executives maintain that AI is intended to upgrade employee roles rather than eliminate them. These assurances follow a period of corporate layoffs in technology and product design departments. Financially, the company's valuation has surpassed $1 trillion, with 2025 revenues reaching $713 billion, even as total headcounts saw a marginal decline over the last five years.

Despite executive optimism, the strategy faces significant opposition from employees and the labor advocacy group United for Respect. Critics argue that rushed automation rollouts create unrealistic schedules, burnout, and safety hazards for frontline workers. Shareholders recently rejected a proposal backed by United for Respect that sought a formal report on the impact of automation on the workforce.
