Rocket Lab Delays Neutron Rocket Launch to 2027

Rocket Lab postponed the inaugural launch of its Neutron Rocket to 2027 after discovering manufacturing defects in a fuel propellant tank.

Rocket Lab has delayed the first launch of its crew-capable Neutron Rocket until 2027 after discovering manufacturing defects in a fuel propellant tank. Founder Peter Beck reported that small air pockets, or voids, were found in the shell of the tank, compromising the structural strength and reliability of the vehicle.

The company is now using an automated fibre placement machine to build a new forward dome. Rocket Lab plans to conduct cryogenic tests and ultrasonic analysis before establishing a firm launch date, which is currently expected by mid-2027. This represents the latest setback for a project originally targeted for 2024.

Beck stated that the company will not rush to the launchpad with a "minimum viable product" or "unnecessary risk," prioritizing long-term infrastructure over an immediate flight. Following the announcement, Rocket Lab shares on the Nasdaq fell 7.85% during regular trading and an additional 10.94% in after-hours trading, closing at US$53.30.
