Democrats Reclaim House as DSA Bloc Triples in Size

Democrats are projected to regain control of the U.S. House, while five Democratic Socialists of America candidates won seats, creating potential friction over the legislative agenda.

The Democratic Party is projected to reclaim control of the U.S. House of Representatives in the 2026 midterm elections, with NBC News estimating the party could secure at least 244 seats. This shift positions House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries to potentially become the first African American Speaker of the House. Jeffries intends to focus on an affordability agenda covering health care, housing, and utilities, while launching oversight investigations into President Donald Trump and his administration.

Simultaneously, the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) significantly expanded its influence, with five endorsed candidates winning House seats: Darializa Avila Chevalier and Claire Valdez in New York, Melat Kiros in Colorado, Donavan McKinney in Michigan, and Chris Rabb in Pennsylvania. These victories, which include Kiros defeating a 15-term incumbent, more than triple the number of DSA members in the House. The new members campaigned on economic populist policies, including universal healthcare and the cessation of U.S. military aid to Israel.

This growth has created immediate tension within the party. Jeffries has explicitly stated he does not support the DSA agenda, and none of the incoming DSA-endorsed members have committed to supporting his speakership. Some candidates, including Chevalier, have conditioned their support on commitments to Medicare for All and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act. House Speaker Mike Johnson has leveraged the DSA's rise to characterize the Democratic Party as moving toward the "far communist Marxist left."
