Huawei Chair Urges AI Acceleration as Anthropic CEO Seeks China Curbs

Rotating Chairman of Huawei Eric Xu called for Chinese artificial intelligence laboratories to accelerate their development during the company's annual Connect conference in Shanghai. Xu argued that Chinese developers may not yet be advanced enough to encounter the frontier safety risks reported by leading U.S. firms and should speed up to a level where they can perceive these risks while balancing innovation with management.

This push for rapid advancement contrasts with trends in Silicon Valley, where companies like OpenAI and Anthropic have expressed concerns over autonomous systems bypassing safeguards. While the Government of China drafts mandatory national standards for AI agent safety, Huawei predicts that autonomous AI agents will account for over 90 percent of global AI processing traffic by 2035.

Simultaneously, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei urged the United States government and private companies to implement restrictions on China's AI development, including curbs on chips, computing power, and model distillation. Amodei argued that a Chinese lead in the field would pose a grave danger to the U.S. and the world. The Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China refuted these claims, accusing the U.S. of pursuing technological hegemony and seeking to monopolize computing power. Some critics and investors suggested Amodei's proposals are driven by commercial interests to protect Anthropic's competitive edge against Chinese open-source models.
