Zimbabwe Opposition Leader Masarira Dies at 43, Sparking Political Divide

Linda Masarira, leader of Zimbabwe's LEAD party, died at 43, triggering fierce debate over her legacy as former colleagues accused her of betraying the opposition.

Linda Masarira, the 43-year-old leader of the Labour Economists and African Democrats (LEAD) party, died in Harare on Sunday morning after battling respiratory complications, diabetes, and heart-related illnesses. A veteran opposition figure, Masarira previously served as spokesperson for the Movement for Democratic Change – T faction and was a member of the People's Democratic Party before founding LEAD in 2019 to focus on labor rights and economic empowerment. She was unable to contest the 2023 presidential election after the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission raised nomination fees from US$1,000 to US$20,000.

Her death quickly exposed a deep rift in Zimbabwe's political landscape. Government officials, including Permanent Secretary Nick Mangwana, described her as a fearless patriot and a national loss. Fellow activists praised her advocacy for women and vulnerable communities. However, prominent opposition figures refused to mourn her. Jacob Ngarivhume, leader of Transform Zimbabwe, and Obert Masaraure, president of the Amalgamation of Rural Teachers (ARTUZ), accused Masarira of betraying the opposition movement by aligning with the ruling ZANU-PF party. They alleged she used her platform to falsely claim opposition activists received foreign funding and faked abductions, accusations they said put activists in danger. Constitutional law expert Dr. Justice Mavedzenge also rejected mourning Masarira, dismissing the Shona tradition of 'wafa wanaka'—which encourages speaking only positively of the dead—and arguing that the truth about her actions should not be concealed.
