SEC and CFTC Launch Project Crypto to Align Regulations

The SEC and CFTC announced Project Crypto, a coordinated effort to standardize digital asset definitions and jurisdictions to establish the U.S. as a global crypto leader.

The Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission have launched Project Crypto, a joint regulatory initiative designed to eliminate gaps and synchronize compliance obligations for digital assets. Paul S. Atkins, Chairman of the SEC, and Michael S. Selig, Chairman of the CFTC, announced the effort during a harmonization event at CFTC headquarters in Washington.

The initiative aligns with President Donald Trump's objective to position the United States as a global leader in cryptocurrency activity. The agencies aim to develop a unified taxonomy to distinguish digital commodities and collectibles from securities. Specific priorities include addressing prediction markets, perpetual futures, and tokenized collateral.

While the agencies will pursue joint codification of certain frameworks as Congress develops broader market-structure legislation, both leaders stated that cooperation will not diminish enforcement actions related to market integrity and investor protection.
