European Automakers Launch Retro EVs to Combat Chinese Rivals

European car manufacturers are reviving classic models as electric vehicles to leverage brand heritage against low-cost Chinese competitors like BYD and Geely.

European automakers are reviving classic car models as electric vehicles to differentiate themselves from Chinese competitors. Manufacturers such as BYD and Geely held nearly 11% of the European market in the second quarter, utilizing cheaper models and advanced technology to gain ground.

Renault Group has led this strategy with the electric Renault 5, which is currently the best-selling mid-sized EV in Europe. The model contributed to a 9% increase in the company's first-half revenue. Other manufacturers have followed suit, with Stellantis unveiling an electric Citroen 2CV at the Paris Autoshow and Volkswagen introducing an electric Polo featuring retro-inspired elements.

Executives state that leveraging brand heritage evokes emotional responses from buyers and provides a competitive edge in the affordable EV segment. However, industry leaders warn that nostalgia has limits. They maintain that long-term viability requires pairing retro designs with technical advancements in autonomous driving and fast charging.
