High-Speed Trains Collide in Toledo Killing Up to 68

Two high-speed trains collided near Urda, Spain, causing multiple derailments and leaving between 30 and 68 people dead due to a communications failure.

Two high-speed trains collided Wednesday morning near Urda in Spain's Toledo province on the Madrid-Andalusia line. A train operated by Renfe struck the rear of a stationary Iryo train, causing several carriages to derail and plunge down an embankment. Reports on the death toll vary significantly, with some sources citing 30 fatalities and others reporting 64 or 68 deaths.

Spain's transport minister attributed the crash to a computer communications failure that triggered a red signal, followed by an erroneous decision to authorize the Renfe train to proceed in breach of protocol. This marks Spain's second deadly rail accident this year, following a January crash in Cordoba that killed 46 people.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed solidarity with the victims as the disaster occurs one month before a general election on November 29. In response to the tragedy, the opposition People's Party cancelled campaign events, and rail services between Madrid, Ciudad Real, and Andalusia were suspended.
