RCMP Investigates Centurion Project for Leaking 2.9 Million Voter Records

The RCMP and Elections Alberta are investigating Centurion Project Ltd. after the group published the personal data of 2.9 million Alberta voters via a public app.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Elections Alberta are investigating the unauthorized publication of personal data belonging to 2.9 million registered voters. The information, including names, addresses, and phone numbers, was allegedly obtained by Centurion Project Ltd., an Alberta separatist group led by David Parker, via a list lawfully provided to the Republican Party of Alberta.

In response, the Court of King’s Bench in Edmonton granted an emergency injunction prohibiting Centurion Project from further using the List of Electors and requiring both the group and the Republican Party of Alberta to identify all parties who accessed the data. Centurion Project has since shut down the relevant portions of its website and app, claiming it relied on a third party for the datasets.

Chief Electoral Officer Gordon McClure described the breach as extremely serious, noting specific risks to law enforcement and domestic violence survivors. To mitigate further harm, the agency implemented new verification steps for citizen initiative petitions. Privacy Commissioner Diane McLeod has used the incident to call for amendments to the Personal Information Protection Act to ensure political parties are subject to privacy laws, citing a legislative gap that limits her jurisdiction.

Elections Alberta faced criticism for delaying the probe after a journalist flagged the breach on March 31. The agency defended the timeline by citing 2025 legislative changes that require reasonable grounds before launching investigations.
