Omar Abdullah Opposes Uniform Civil Code and Rohingya Deportations

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah rejected the Uniform Civil Code and criticized central government actions against Rohingya refugees and voter roll deletions.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah rejected the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code in Jammu and Kashmir, challenging the Bharatiya Janata Party to introduce the legislation in Parliament rather than applying it piecemeal in BJP-ruled states. He argued that the code cannot be considered uniform unless it is implemented across all regions.

Abdullah also criticized the Government of India for sudden administrative actions against Rohingya refugees in Srinagar, stating they are being targeted for no reason. While he distinguished Rohingyas from illegal migrants from Bangladesh—noting that those entering without permission cannot stay—he maintained that the region had previously provided refuge to Rohingyas. This criticism followed the October 5 deportation of 250 Bangladeshi nationals from Jammu and Kashmir to West Bengal via an Indian Air Force flight.

On electoral matters, Abdullah welcomed a Supreme Court of India decision to question large-scale voter deletions conducted during the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The court has sought responses from the Government of India and the Election Commission of India regarding these deletions and the unauthorized use of a modified Form 6 for enrollment. This judicial move coincides with a Save Democracy campaign and protest march to the Election Commission in New Delhi organized by the INDIA bloc.
