Ilhan Omar Sparks Democratic Divide After Event With Hasan Piker

Representative Ilhan Omar faced backlash from fellow Minnesota Democrats after appearing with controversial streamer Hasan Piker to mobilize young voters ahead of midterm elections.

U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar appeared on a podcast and at a sold-out campaign event in Minneapolis alongside political streamer Hasan Piker. The appearances, hosted by Minnesota State Senator Omar Fateh, occurred eight days before the midterm elections as a strategic effort to engage voters under 40, whose early voting numbers have declined.

The association sparked immediate condemnation from other Minnesota Democrats. Representative Angie Craig described Piker's rhetoric as "polarizing and dangerous," while the gubernatorial campaign of Senator Amy Klobuchar labeled his past statements "reckless and unacceptable." Critics specifically pointed to Piker's previous comments regarding the September 11 attacks, Hamas, and Jewish people as political liabilities that could signal growing antisemitism on the left and damage the party's 2028 presidential prospects.

Omar's campaign defended the decision by asserting that the Democratic Party is a "Big Tent party" and that the event was necessary for youth mobilization. Supporters of the move argued that the appearance was a localized strategy to engage her specific district and does not reflect the views of the broader Democratic Party.
