Morgan Stanley Strategist Warns of S&P 500 Correction

Mike Wilson warns that bond market volatility could trigger a 5% to 10% correction in the S&P 500.

Chief U.S. equity strategist and chief investment officer at Morgan Stanley, Mike Wilson, warns that volatility in the U.S. bond market could trigger a 5% to 10% correction in the S&P 500. Wilson points to the 30-year Treasury yield hitting a 22-year high and the 10-year yield reaching levels not seen since 2007 as evidence that the bond market is leaning too hawkish.

Despite the risk of a decline, Wilson states he would welcome a final index-level correction to conclude a multi-month underlying correction, which could allow the market to finish the year stronger. He suggests that if these pressures ease, market breadth can catch up and drive indices higher.

Wilson advises investors to monitor funding stress and bond volatility. He recommends favoring large-cap quality businesses—specifically those that are services-oriented, fee-based, or asset-like—as the market shifts away from the automotive and semiconductor sectors.
