Russia Says No Immediate Prospects for Grain Deal Revival
Alexander Alimov of the Russian Foreign Ministry stated there are no immediate prospects for reviving the Black Sea Grain Initiative.
Senior Russian diplomat Alexander Alimov stated on Monday that there are no immediate prospects for reviving the Black Sea Grain Initiative. While Russia continues dialogue with Turkey and other nations regarding maritime navigation, Moscow maintains the position it took after withdrawing from the 2022 UN-brokered agreement in the summer of 2023.
Russia previously justified its exit by citing Western sanctions on its food and fertilizer exports and alleging that Ukraine used the maritime corridor for military operations. The original deal facilitated the transport of 33 million metric tons of Ukrainian agricultural exports before its collapse.
The absence of the agreement has coincided with an increase in attacks by both Russia and Ukraine on port infrastructure and commercial vessels. These disruptions have contributed to rising global wheat prices.
