Syrian Protesters Block M4 Highway Over Fuel Price Hikes

Residents and drivers in Syria blocked the M4 highway near Tal Tamr for two days starting September 15, 2026, to protest sharp fuel price increases. The demonstrations involved burning tires and creating rock barricades, which stranded approximately 600 oil tankers and disrupted the movement of energy supplies.

The Government of Syria implemented the price hikes on September 13, raising diesel prices by 40 percent and gasoline by nearly 26 to 28 percent. Protesters and tanker drivers argued that the increases have made transport operations nearly unprofitable against a backdrop of stagnant incomes. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that similar blockages and minibus driver strikes occurred across Hasakah, Deir al-Zour, and Raqqa provinces, where disruptions also affected wholesale fruit and vegetable trading.

Syrian authorities stated that fuel prices are subject to review based on exchange rates and international costs. To reduce a heavy reliance on imports—including 74 percent of the country's diesel—the government highlighted the restoration of 162 oil wells during the first half of 2026.
