West Bengal Holds Bypolls in Nandigram and Rejinagar
Voters in West Bengal cast ballots on October 6 for bypolls that serve as the first electoral test for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.
Voters in the Nandigram and Rejinagar constituencies of West Bengal cast ballots on October 6, with results expected on October 9. These bypolls represent the first electoral test for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) since it ended the 15-year rule of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in May. The results are expected to gauge the BJP's early governance and its appeal among minority voters, particularly in Rejinagar.
In Nandigram, the BJP fielded Hasirani Rath, whose candidacy was upheld by the Calcutta High Court after the Indian National Congress challenged her age credentials. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, who vacated the seat to retain Bhabanipur, campaigned in support of Rath. The Congress nominee, Milan Pradhan, resumed canvassing on October 4 after receiving bail from the high court following an arrest on September 18 related to 2007 anti-land acquisition protests. To strengthen the INDIA bloc, the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC faction backed Pradhan.
Rejinagar features a fragmented field including candidates from the BJP, the Aam Janata Unnayan Party, and two rival TMC factions. The Aam Janata Unnayan Party fielded Golam Nabi Azad after party chief Humayun Kabir decided to retain the Nawda seat. The outcome in Rejinagar is viewed as a key indicator of which opposition party can emerge as the primary challenger to the BJP in the state's new political landscape.
