Governor Spanberger Allows Dyed Diesel on Virginia Public Roads

Governor Abigail Spanberger signed an executive directive allowing the temporary use of dyed diesel on public roads to relieve small businesses facing record-high fuel costs.

Abigail Spanberger, the Governor of Virginia, signed an executive directive temporarily permitting the use of dyed diesel fuel on public roads through December 31. The measure provides relief to farmers, loggers, and small businesses struggling with diesel prices that averaged $6.20 per gallon over the last month, representing a 73% increase from the previous year.

While dyed diesel is normally reserved for off-road agricultural and construction equipment to qualify for tax breaks, users under this directive must still pay the standard motor fuels tax of 33.6 cents per gallon. The directive orders the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles to waive penalties for the road use of dyed diesel and to streamline the process for paying the required backup tax.

Spanberger stated the action is necessary to keep equipment running and ensure the movement of food and goods amid global market and trade disruptions. The temporary suspension of restrictions aims to reduce the financial strain on Virginians who are already facing high grocery prices.
