Speaker Wetang'ula Presides Over Historic First DCP Seat Swearing-In

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula presided over the swearing-in of Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru on July 28, 2026. Waweru assumed office as the Member of Parliament for Ol Kalou after winning a by-election with 35,440 votes, defeating United Democratic Alliance candidate Samuel Muchina Nyagah. The victory represents the first parliamentary seat secured by the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) since its formation.

The ceremony was marked by a dispute when 13 members of Parliament attended wearing matching green blazers associated with the DCP. John Kiarie, MP for Dagoretti South, objected to the attire, arguing that the coordinated dress violated House Standing Orders prohibiting party insignia. Wetang'ula declined to rule the members out of order, stating he was not convinced the blazers constituted official insignia, though he warned that party uniforms would not be entertained except on special occasions.

Additionally, the proceedings were briefly interrupted when Nyandarua Senator John Methu accidentally occupied a seat reserved for the Deputy President in the Speaker’s Gallery. Methu vacated the seat after being guided by the Speaker, later describing the incident as an innocent mistake.
