CNN Distances Itself From Scott Jennings' Mitch McConnell Health Claims

CNN clarified that political commentator Scott Jennings' claims of a phone call with hospitalized Senator Mitch McConnell are not network reporting amid rumors of the senator's condition.

Cable News Network, Inc. distanced itself from political commentator Scott Jennings after he claimed to have had a wide-ranging, 17-to-20-minute phone conversation with Senator Mitch McConnell. Jennings asserted that McConnell sounded strong and discussed topics including Iran, Ukraine, and Senate history, suggesting the senator was preparing to return to work.

These claims emerged as McConnell remained hospitalized following a suspected cardiac arrest on June 14. The commentator's account countered viral rumors and allegations from figures such as Laura Loomer, who claimed the senator was brain dead. While a spokesperson for McConnell stated he continues to improve and is working with staff, the lack of official transparency led Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear to issue a letter requesting a full health update for the citizens of Kentucky.

CNN issued a statement on July 10 clarifying that Jennings is not a full-time employee or journalist and that his account reflects his personal experience rather than verified network reporting. This clarification followed the release of footage showing McConnell being loaded into an ambulance on the day he fell ill. In response to the conflicting accounts, former Republican operative Cheri Jacobus demanded that CNN fire Jennings if his claims about the phone call were proven false.
