Federal Reserve Weighs October Interest Rate Hike

Federal Reserve officials are considering another interest rate increase in October following a September hike, though weak payroll data has sparked internal debate over timing.

The Federal Open Market Committee is weighing a potential interest rate hike in October, which would follow a September increase that marked the first rate rise since July 2023. While all 19 officials supported the September action and most expect another increase before the end of the year, recent economic indicators have introduced caution into the decision-making process.

A September payrolls report showing only 29,000 new jobs and a slowdown in wage growth to 3.0% have led some officials to advocate for patience. Federal Reserve Bank of New York President John Williams stated that one more hike this year is "likely" appropriate, though he expects no further increases in 2027.

Internal opinions on the urgency of further action remain divided. Governor Christopher Waller supports additional hikes but argues against implementing them at consecutive meetings. Conversely, Governor Michelle Bowman sees no immediate need for further increases, while Vice Chair Philip Jefferson stated there is time to assess incoming economic data before committing to a new path.
