New Zealand and Canada Establish Annual Trade Investment Dialogue

New Zealand and Canada agreed to launch an annual Trade and Investment Dialogue to increase bilateral exports and resolve trade disputes.

The Government of New Zealand and the Government of Canada have agreed to establish an annual Trade and Investment Dialogue to increase bilateral trade and lift export volumes. Trade and Investment Minister Todd McClay announced that the initiative will begin with annual meetings at the senior officials' level, which will subsequently lead to annual meetings between the trade ministers of both nations.

The Dialogue is designed to address challenging international and domestic trade issues while supporting New Zealand's objective to double its export value by 2034. Canada currently serves as New Zealand's tenth largest export market. In the year ending June 2026, two-way trade totaled NZ$3.46 billion, with New Zealand exporting NZ$2.18 billion in meat, dairy, and fruit, and importing NZ$1.28 billion in fertilizers and machinery from Canada.

Both countries already maintain partnerships through the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership and the World Trade Organization. This new framework intends to build upon those existing collaborations to further expand economic ties.
