Mayor Donna Deegan Proposes $2.03 Billion Jacksonville Budget

Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan proposed a $2.03 billion budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year on July 20, 2026. The balanced proposal increases overall spending by approximately $22.5 million, or 1.1%, over the previous year without drawing from city reserve funds.

Public safety remains the primary priority, with $1.07 billion—roughly 53% of the general fund—allocated to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and Jacksonville Fire and Rescue. The budget also directs significant funds toward infrastructure, including $36 million for road resurfacing, $25 million for a septic-tank phaseout, and $12 million for sidewalk repairs. Additional funding is earmarked for University of Florida Health indigent care, homelessness programs, and senior meal services.

City Council President Nick Howland expressed support for the public safety allocations but argued for a smaller overall budget to right-size the government. Similarly, Council Finance Chair Will Lahnen advised preserving cash, noting that a potential property tax referendum in November could lead to budget reductions if voters approve tax relief.

Mayor Deegan will host a series of community town halls beginning August 5 to collect resident feedback before the Jacksonville City Council conducts final hearings and votes on the proposal.
