Philip Davis Open to Bahamas Becoming a Republic

Prime Minister Philip Davis says he is open to removing King Charles III as head of state following the monarch's official visit to The Bahamas.

Prime Minister Philip Davis stated he is open to The Bahamas becoming a republic and removing King Charles III as head of state. Speaking after the monarch's first official visit to the nation, Davis described himself as agnostic on the issue and noted that any transition would require a referendum to determine the will of the Bahamian people.

The discussion follows broader Caribbean demands for the monarchy to apologize for its role in the slave trade and provide reparations. Davis suggested that while financial reparations could be challenging, repair could instead manifest through education, scholarships, or formal acknowledgement.

During a youth rally in Nassau, King Charles III acknowledged the "great suffering of the past" in the islands and beyond. The monarch indicated that the legacy of slavery will be a topic of discussion at the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Antigua and Barbuda.
