European Commission Expands DMA Focus to AI and Cloud
The European Commission plans to apply Digital Markets Act regulations to artificial intelligence and cloud computing services to increase market fairness and contestability.
The European Commission plans to expand the focus of the Digital Markets Act (DMA) to regulate cloud computing and artificial intelligence services. According to a report published April 29, 2026, regulators aim to make these sectors more contestable and fair, specifically investigating whether Microsoft and Amazon should be designated as gatekeepers for their cloud services.
European Union antitrust chief Teresa Ribera stated the DMA was designed to adapt to emerging challenges in AI and cloud technologies. While the Commission reported that the DMA has already improved data portability and interoperability for users, Apple criticized these findings, arguing that the regulations compromise user privacy, security, and innovation.
Despite the expansion into new technologies, the Commission announced it will not change current gatekeeper designation criteria or force interoperability between social networks, citing a lack of clear demand. The move follows calls from the pan-European consumer lobbying organization BEUC for increased enforcement in new digital areas.
