Norway Proposes Temporary Ban on AI Glasses in Public

The Government of Norway plans to ban AI glasses in privacy-sensitive public locations to prevent non-consensual recording of citizens.

The Government of Norway announced plans on October 5, 2026, to propose a temporary ban on AI glasses in specific public and privacy-sensitive locations. The measure targets areas where individuals are highly vulnerable to non-consensual recording, including schools, doctors' offices, gyms with changing rooms, parks, beaches, museums, shopping centers, public events, playgrounds, and youth clubs.

Digitalisation and Public Governance Minister Torgeir Micaelsen stated that the government is concerned about the introduction of powerful technology that risks photographing, filming, or audio-recording people without their knowledge. The government clarified that it is not seeking a total ban; private use and scenarios where others are not at risk of being filmed without consent remain permitted.

The minority government intends to present a bill to parliament and establish an expert group to develop permanent national regulations for body-worn technology.
