UN and US Report Escalating Terrorist Threats in West Africa

United Nations special representative Leonardo Simão warned the UN Security Council that terrorist groups in northern Nigeria, the central Sahel, and West Africa are deploying drones, cryptocurrencies, and sophisticated communications to coordinate cross-border operations. He noted that these groups are intertwining terrorism with transnational organized crime to seize territorial and economic control and undermine state authority. The resulting instability has displaced approximately 6.8 million people and created 1.28 million refugees.

Simão emphasized that military action alone cannot eliminate the threat and urged governments to address socio-economic drivers, specifically poverty and vulnerability. While he pointed to the reopening of the Kamba border crossing between Nigeria and Niger and progress by the Cameroon-Nigeria Mixed Commission as diplomatic improvements, he described the situation in northern Nigeria and the central Sahel as acute.

In a coinciding security development, the United States reported a joint operation with Nigerian forces that killed 199 jihadists. U.S. officials described the mission as resulting in the largest seizure of terrorist equipment in Nigeria since 2001.
