Republicans Win Key New York State Senate and Assembly Seats

Republicans secured three New York State Senate seats and flipped a State Assembly district during the November 3 midterm elections.

Republicans and Democrats split results across five closely watched New York State Senate races in Nassau and Suffolk counties during the November 3 midterm elections. Republicans won three contests, with Steven D. Rhoads retaining the 5th District seat, while Jake Blumencranz and Jarett C. Gandolfo won open seats in the 7th and 8th Districts, respectively. Democrats retained the 6th District seat with Siela A. Bynoe and flipped the 9th District, where challenger Lisa “Malkie” Vider declared victory over Republican incumbent Patricia M. Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick, though the incumbent has not yet conceded.

In a separate race for New York State’s 119th Assembly District, Republican Michael Gentile declared victory over Democrat Jon Lipe. Unofficial reporting from the Oneida County Board of Elections showed Gentile receiving 18,341 votes to Lipe's 16,472. The victory flips the seat, previously held by retiring Democrat Marianne Buttenschon, to Republican control for the first time in several years, although some sources initially noted the race was too close to call.

Despite the flip in the 119th District, Democrats maintain a significant majority in the State Assembly, leading Republicans 101 to 36 with 13 seats still undecided. The Senate races focused primarily on infrastructure, public safety, affordability, and property-tax relief.
