Chief Justice Kekere-Ekun Bans 'Barrister' Prefix in Supreme Court

Chief Justice of Nigeria Kudirat Kekere-Ekun has banned the use of the title "Barrister" as a prefix to names in all official correspondence, records, identity materials, and engagements at the Supreme Court. The directive, communicated via a memorandum signed by Chief Registrar Kabir E. Akanbi, takes immediate effect and applies to legal practitioners, litigation staff, and court registrars. Department and unit heads have been tasked with ensuring strict compliance.

The order aligns with a 2017 Supreme Court ruling in Nigerian Bar Association vs Ofomata, which described the practice as unprofessional and indicative of "self-aggrandizement." The prohibition also reflects the Rules of Professional Conduct 2007 and common law traditions. Legal practitioners in Lagos have welcomed the measure as a necessary step to restore decorum.

This action follows concerns from the Body of Benchers regarding the abusive use of the title, particularly by political figures. Additionally, the Council of Legal Education recently warned prospective lawyers against wearing legal regalia before being formally called to the Nigerian Bar. While some reports date the circular to July 31, other documents date it to July 13, 2026.
