ExxonMobil Awards $1.1 Billion in Mozambique LNG Contracts
ExxonMobil Moçambique awarded $1.1 billion in pre-investment contracts for the Rovuma LNG Phase 1 project to secure critical equipment ahead of a final investment decision.
ExxonMobil Moçambique, Limitada, acting for the Area 4 co-venturers, awarded approximately $1.1 billion in pre-investment contracts for the Rovuma LNG Phase 1 development in Cabo Delgado, Mozambique. The contracts cover critical long-lead upstream equipment, including subsea production systems, large-bore production valves, and offshore line pipe, intended to optimize execution timelines before a final investment decision.
OneSubsea received the largest contract for the engineering, procurement, and manufacturing of subsea production systems, with local support from Aker Solutions Mozambique. Other major awards were granted to Advanced Technology Valve S.p.A., Corinth Pipeworks, Sumitomo Corporation of America, and Zhejiang Jiuli Hi-Tech Metals Co., Ltd. The project aims to develop offshore gas resources and an onshore facility with a planned annual production capacity of 18.6 million tonnes of LNG.
These investments signal a revival for the project, which faced a force majeure declaration in 2021 due to regional security challenges. If completed, the development could generate up to $150 billion for the Mozambican state over 30 years and add an estimated $11 billion annually to the national GDP at peak production. Johanna Boothey, Lead Country Manager of ExxonMobil Moçambique, stated that the awards reflect a commitment to responsibly develop the region's natural gas resources.
