Energy Department Redirects Billions to Baseload and Grid Projects

The Office of Energy Dominance Financing is redirecting federal energy lending toward baseload generation, transmission, and nuclear projects following the passage of the Working Families Tax Cuts Act. As part of this strategic shift, the agency has restructured or eliminated more than $83 billion in loans from the previous administration, including $9.5 billion previously allocated for wind and solar energy.

Recent funding actions include a $3.26 billion loan closed on July 8 to American Electric Power Inc. Texas to finance 100 transmission projects spanning 2,800 miles of infrastructure. This follows a $26.5 billion loan package granted to Southern Company subsidiaries in February for gas, nuclear, and grid projects, and a $1.6 billion loan closed in June for DTE Gas Company to modernize distribution lines in Michigan.

Director Gregory A. Beard stated that the new focus aims to provide affordable and reliable energy. He contrasted these efforts with prior policies, which he claimed undermined the national grid with intermittent and expensive technologies.
